“There are trends and then there is the future. At some of the investor events we see advertised, they are focusing on cryptocurrencies, blockchain, and cannabis – these areas are trendy right now, but at Pique Ventures, we notice other technologies that have long-term utility.”

Bonnie Foley-Wong, Pique Ventures CEO, joined Jill Earthy from Female Funders, Emily Key from Shopify, Paula Cruickshank from BDC, and Jossie Haines from Tile at the BC Tech Summit to discuss the future of tech and how women are advancing disruptive technologies. Bonnie shared some insights including how tech ventures can create economic opportunities and how to make decisions to identify impactful ventures that are disrupting business-as-usual.

How early-stage tech ventures are creating economic opportunities

At Pique Ventures, we’re seeing women and other underrepresented leaders are approaching disruptive technologies differently. Women are creating technologies that help businesses operate more efficiently and effectively and that create good quality jobs in the process.

They are building technologies that help elevate people into higher quality, more interesting work, rather than simply automate and eliminate a lot of jobs, such as Beanworks, an accounting workflow automation company, in which Pique invested at seed stage and also supported through their Series A and B growth rounds. Women are advancing technologies that are creating new economic activity such as MuseFind, another Pique portfolio company. MuseFind is a CRM that helps small businesses grow by managing their influencer marketers – which generates new economic activity through its supply chain of influencer marketers.

How to make decisions and identify disruptive technologies

One of the tools we use at Pique Ventures that helps us identify the leaders and technologies we want to invest in is integrated decision-making. With integrated decision-making, we integrate analysis, emotion, body, and intuition into our investment decisions. Intuition is often talked about – particularly entrepreneurial intuition – but there are competing views as to what intuition is. A hypothesis that Pique Ventures CEO and investor, Bonnie Foley-Wong, is exploring right now is, what if intuition is a decision free from some or all of our biases?

One thing is certain, emotions drive decisions. Antonio Damasio, a prominent neuroscientist, found that people with damage to the part of the brain that controls emotions were not able to make decisions. Using only logic to make decisions and leaving emotions out, destroyed someone’s life.

By integrating analysis, emotion, body, and intuition into our investment decisions, we make better use of all the information available to us and enables us to invest, not in what’s trendy, but rather in the future of tech.
